Meet The Fox & Heron Founders
Our Story
What we are all about...
Located along South Carolina's coast, The Fox and Heron Literary Society was formed by two very bookish friends as a way to connect with other book lovers. The goal is to establish a regular salon as a way to gather and engage with others. Our hope is to build a community built around the sharing of ideas, open dialogue, and, of course, good book recommendations. We invite anyone interested in lively conversation to join us. Read more about why we chose to start a literary society on our blog.

I cannot remember not loving to read. Growing up, I devoured Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High, and Babysitters Club. My favorite, though, was always Anne of Green Gables. I spend entirely too much time reading, listening, and watching about southern culinary anthropology. Luckily, my husband, Ryan, enjoys it too, which has led to a lot of great meals - and a few failed experiments. I have a BA in English from Coastal Carolina University and a Master's in Library and Information Science from UNC-Greensboro. After over 20 years as a freelance journalist and travel writer, I focus on libraries as cultural space, planning displays, exhibits, and events for an academic library. When I'm not reading and writing, I do a lot of road tripping and kayaking with Ryan, our sons, Ethan and Corrin, and our snuggly chocolate lab, June.

I have been in love with literature since 1st grade when my parents gave me a book about fairies as a prize for making an A on a math test. My favorite book is Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women", although it could be improved if the March sisters could use magic. I studied English at Columbia College and am active in Georgetown's theatrical community. At the Georgetown School of Arts and Sciences, I taught children's and youth acting and stage production and helped organize the annual Shakespeare Festival. As an active board member of the Swamp Fox Players at The Strand Theater, I have a true interest in seeing Georgetown's cultural scene grow to reflect its entire community. I work at a local dental practice, but feel most at home in bookstores, libraries, and the local community theater. When not performing, I am busy designing and sewing, reading as much as possible, and taking road trips with my husband, Richie. Richie and I have been married since 1999 and have two beautiful children, Trey and Cathryn.
